Lebanon Faces Deadliest Spillover as Israeli Strikes Kill Civilians Amid US‑Iran Deal

Lebanon has suffered the deadliest spillover of the regional war, with the health ministry reporting at least 3,783 deaths, 11,699 injuries and more than one‑million people displaced since March 2. Israeli drone strikes in the Nabatieh governorate on 15‑16 June killed four civilians and wounded others, targeting vehicles in Mayfadoun and Shoukin despite a fragile cease‑fire.

A U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding, announced on 14 June, calls for an immediate and permanent halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. Iranian officials, through the Khatam al‑Anbiya Central Headquarters and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, warned Israel that continued attacks would provoke a “hard response” and constitute a breach of the deal. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz reiterated that Israel is not a party to the agreement and will not withdraw forces from southern Lebanon, Gaza or Syria.

Lebanese authorities have warned displaced residents not to rush back, citing insecurity and ongoing occupation of a self‑declared security zone. The war has caused extensive physical damage—over 68,000 housing units destroyed or damaged, infrastructure losses estimated at $14 billion, and a projected contraction of Lebanon’s economy by at least 7 %.
