Lebanon faces border smuggling arrests and Israeli military strikes

Military activity and security operations are escalating in Lebanon. The Lebanese Army reported the arrest of a Syrian national attempting to smuggle rocket projectiles across the border near the town of Ayta al-Shiq in the Rashaya district. In a separate operation in the town of Shaat within the Baalbek district, ten Syrian nationals were detained following a dispute at a refugee camp.

Simultaneously, the Israeli military conducted a series of heavy artillery strikes and explosions across several towns in southern Lebanon, including Majdal Zun, Bint Jbeil, and Ayta al-Jabal. Reports indicate that Israeli aircraft conducted airstrikes, while armored vehicles carried out bulldozing operations in towns such as Bayout al-Sayyad and Hawla. These actions occur amid ongoing tensions following a framework agreement intended to restore Lebanese military authority in the south, contingent upon the disarmament of Hezbollah.

The security situation is further complicated by the renewed focus on border demarcation between Lebanon and Syria following recent political shifts in Syria.
