Lebanon Human Rights Commission Rejects Limits on War Crimes Prosecutions

The Lebanese National Human Rights Commission warned that any political agreements must not restrict Lebanon’s right to pursue perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity and torture. It emphasized that such prosecutions are legitimate legal actions, not hostile or political moves, and are required under international law.

The commission cautioned that commitments to refrain from legal actions in international forums would undermine victims’ rights and Lebanon’s ability to use mechanisms such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and United Nations bodies. It reiterated that the right to seek justice is protected by Lebanon’s constitution and international treaties, and cannot be waived by political understandings.
