Israel-Lebanon war crimes scrutiny

In late June 2026 the Lebanon Human Rights Commission publicly rejected proposals that would restrict investigations and prosecutions of war crimes, signaling resistance to any attempts to limit accountability for alleged violations.

A month later, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon had caused widespread destruction and heavy civilian casualties, describing attacks on villages, homes, schools, health centres and essential infrastructure. The UN office, backed by an independent fact‑finding mission active since early March, suggested that some of these actions could breach international humanitarian law and amount to war crimes. Türk called for accountability, protection of civilians and respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty, while the Lebanese army noted that ongoing Israeli strikes hampered its deployment in the south under existing cease‑fire arrangements.
