Lebanon-Israel negotiations face delays amid UNIFIL future discussions

Negotiations between Lebanon and Israel face delays as Washington seeks to create conditions for a productive eighth round of talks, tentatively planned for early September in Rome. US officials are working to resolve obstacles regarding the implementation of the ‘framework agreement,’ specifically focusing on a verification mechanism to ensure the Lebanese Army's deployment in designated areas is free of Hezbollah weaponry and fighters.

Diplomatic efforts are also addressing the future of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). With UNIFIL's mandate set to end in late 2026, the UN Security Council is scheduled to discuss alternative stability measures. Proposals being considered include maintaining a large-scale mission similar to the current one, or transitioning to a smaller mission focused on monitoring and coordination between the Lebanese Army and Israel.

Political tensions remain high as US officials attempt to influence Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding strategic locations like the Ali al-Tahir hills. Meanwhile, Lebanese officials are treating the current negotiation phase as a period of waiting for developments following the upcoming political season.
