Lebanon-Israel negotiations in Rome end in deadlock

The seventh round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Rome has concluded without concrete results or a confirmed date for an eighth round. The talks faced significant deadlock regarding ceasefire commitments, Israeli military operations, and the establishment of experimental security zones.

Discrepancies have emerged between political and military delegations. While the political side, represented by figures such as Simon Karam, has sought concessions regarding Israeli withdrawals and prisoner agreements, the military delegation highlighted the disconnect between diplomatic proposals and the reality on the ground. A major point of contention remains the mechanism for verifying the Lebanese Army's presence and ensuring areas are free of weapons.

On the ground, tensions remain high as Israel has reportedly continued military actions, including incursions into areas like West Zawtar, despite ongoing discussions. The Lebanese Army has reported casualties resulting from Israeli strikes during road-clearing operations, further complicating the path toward a functional security agreement.
