Lebanon private generator costs surge amid fuel price hikes
Private generator costs in Lebanon have surged, with some residents facing monthly bills of approximately $170 for a 5-ampere subscription. This equates to an annual cost of over $2,000, a significant burden for a service intended as a backup to the official state electricity grid.
The price hike follows an increase in fuel costs, which has driven up the operational expenses for generators and increased the price per kilowatt. Discrepancies in pricing have emerged across different regions, with some operators charging between 80 and 85 cents per kilowatt, exceeding official rates.
In response to the rising costs and inconsistent billing, several municipalities, particularly in the Baabda district, have advised citizens not to pay bills that do not adhere to the Ministry of Energy and Water’s official pricing. Local authorities have warned generator owners of potential legal action and reports to the public prosecution if they violate established tariffs.
