Lebanon reports diplomatic progress amid ongoing Israeli military strikes

Lebanese Foreign Minister Yusef Ragi stated that diplomatic negotiations have successfully slowed Israeli attacks against Beirut and its suburbs. While describing the process as “long and complex,” Ragi emphasized that Lebanon aims to regain full sovereignty and secure the withdrawal of Israeli forces. These efforts follow a framework agreement reached on June 26, mediated by the United States, which includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of the Lebanese Army.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, military activity continues in southern Lebanon. Israeli operations have targeted districts including Tyre, Nabatieh, Bint Jbeil, and Marjeyoun, involving airstrikes, artillery, and demolition operations in areas such as Deir Siryan and Wadi al-Salouqi. Lebanese authorities report that the ongoing offensive has resulted in thousands of casualties and over one million displaced persons.

Domestically, the Lebanese government is pushing for state control over all weapons within its territory, a move that faces opposition from Hezbollah. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has defended armed resistance as a means to recover territory. Meanwhile, international discussions involving France and Jordan are focused on strengthening the Lebanese military to prevent security vacuums in the south.
