Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York to request the maintenance of an international force in southern Lebanon. This request follows a UN Security Council decision, influenced by United States pressure, to end the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at the end of this year.

Salam emphasized that any successor mechanism must ensure the continuity of supervision, reporting, and liaison functions. He stated that such a presence is vital for regional stability and for helping the Lebanese state extend its authority over its entire territory.

UNIFIL has served as a buffer between Lebanon and Israel since 1978 and currently comprises approximately 7,500 personnel from 46 countries. The potential withdrawal occurs amid ongoing tensions, including the presence of Israeli troops in a security zone extending 10 kilometers into southern Lebanon.
