Lebanon schools to reopen amid conflict and displacement

Lebanon is preparing to resume the public school year on September 15, despite significant damage and displacement caused by ongoing fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. According to UNESCO and local reports, hundreds of schools have been affected by the conflict, with some buildings serving as temporary shelters for the more than one million people forced from their homes.

In southern regions such as Nabatieh and South Lebanon, the impact is particularly severe. Reports indicate that hundreds of schools have sustained damage or been destroyed, with many remaining occupied by displaced families. This dual use of facilities as both classrooms and shelters is expected to compromise learning capacity, timing, and overall educational quality.

While the Ministry of Education is encouraging student enrollment and considering flexible options like remote learning in heavily damaged areas, officials warn of a potential lost generation if rapid rehabilitation and psychosocial support are not provided. In some districts, such as Bint Jbeil, schools are attempting to reopen while still hosting displaced residents amidst ongoing infrastructure challenges, including cuts to water and electricity.
