Lebanon security: Diplomatic talks continue over UNIFIL replacement
Diplomatic efforts regarding the security framework in southern Lebanon continue as officials discuss the future of international forces following the conclusion of UNIFIL’s mandate. In Washington, Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh met with Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter to discuss the implementation mechanism of the current framework and potential upcoming negotiations in Rome. While the meeting maintained communication channels, no decisive breakthrough regarding Israeli withdrawals or new agreements was reported.
Discussions regarding a replacement for UNIFIL are ongoing, with reports indicating potential interest from Pakistan. Analysts emphasize that any future international security presence in southern Lebanon must be strictly defined to avoid social integration with local communities, which could compromise its mission. A key requirement for stability is providing the Lebanese Armed Forces with a clear political mandate to maintain sole control over weaponry and state authority.
Negotiations remain complex, with Lebanon calling for Israeli ground actions while international pressure focuses on the Lebanese state's management of weapons. The next formal round of negotiations in Rome has been postponed to October, signaling that while dialogue persists, significant political decisions are still required to resolve outstanding issues.
