UNIFIL mission future uncertain amid US opposition to extension

The future of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is facing significant diplomatic uncertainty as its current mandate approaches its end. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed a plan to accelerate the termination of the mission in its current form, suggesting instead the strengthening of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and the expansion of the UN Special Coordinator's office in Lebanon to include a non-combat military component.

However, the United States has expressed opposition to discussing an extension of the UNIFIL mission. In response to this potential vacuum, Lebanese officials are engaging in intensive diplomatic efforts. President Joseph Aoun has held discussions with leaders in Italy and France to explore alternatives, including the possibility of deploying European forces—such as those from Italy, France, or Spain—under direct security agreements with Lebanon rather than the UN umbrella.

The UN Security Council previously approved a final extension for UNIFIL through December 31, 2026, with a coordinated withdrawal process scheduled to continue until the end of 2027. Amidst these negotiations, UNIFIL has already begun a gradual withdrawal from certain positions, including an observation point near the Khardali bridge, which has been replaced by a Lebanese Army checkpoint.
