Overview

By late August 2026, the future of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) faced heightened diplomatic uncertainty. While the Security Council had previously approved a final mandate extension through 31 December 2026, the United States expressed opposition to discussing further extensions.

In response to this potential vacuum, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres proposed a plan to accelerate the termination of the mission in its current form. His proposal suggests strengthening the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and expanding the UN Special Coordinator’s office in Lebanon to include a non-combat military component.

Lebanese officials are engaging in intensive diplomatic efforts to secure alternatives. President Joseph Aoun has held discussions with leaders in Italy and France to explore the possibility of deploying European forces—specifically from Italy, France, or Spain—under direct security agreements with Lebanon rather than through the UN umbrella.

A coordinated withdrawal process is scheduled to continue through 2027. As part of this transition, UNIFIL has already begun vacating certain positions, such as an observation point near the Khardali bridge, which has been replaced by a Lebanese Army checkpoint.
