Lebanon seeks strategic cooperation with Greece and state restoration

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is working to strengthen state presence and international ties amid ongoing regional instability. During a visit to Athens, Aoun met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, where both leaders agreed to upgrade bilateral relations to a strategic partnership following the recent shipment of Greek military equipment to bolster Lebanese armed forces.

Domestically, President Aoun emphasized the urgent need to restore state authority in southern Lebanon, specifically in areas such as Nabatieh, Tyre, and Arbsalim, despite continued Israeli military activity. While a framework agreement mediated by the United States exists to facilitate the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the development of the Lebanese army, Israel maintains strategic positions in the south.

On the economic front, Aoun highlighted the expansion of the Port of Beirut as a sign of recovery. He also called for accelerated efforts to attract investment from the United Arab Emirates. Non-oil trade between Lebanon and the UAE saw significant growth, reaching $4.2 billion in 2025.
