Lebanon Speaker Berri Rejects US‑Backed Accord as Israel Launches New Air Strikes

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced on 29 June 2026 that he will not approve the trilateral framework agreement involving Lebanon, Israel and the United States, calling it “an agreement of dictation” that fails to protect Lebanon’s rights. The proposal, intended to pave the way for peace and to link Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory to Hezbollah’s disarmament, was rejected in a statement issued by Berri’s Amal Movement.

At the same time, Israel violated the cease‑fire that had been in place after the US‑mediated signing of the framework. Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes on 14 June 2026 in the Dahieh district of Beirut, killing three civilians and wounding 15. Further strikes on 28 June targeted the southern towns of Deir Seryan, Taybeh and Khiam, causing additional damage and civilian fear. Lebanese officials say the attacks come amid a broader campaign that has killed at least 4,246 people and displaced over one million since early March.

The dual developments highlight mounting tensions over the stalled agreement and the fragile cease‑fire in southern Lebanon.
