Lebanon urges U.S. pressure on Israel to implement Framework Agreement
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called on the United States to pressure Israel into implementing the ‘Framework Agreement’ resulting from previous Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations. During a meeting with U.S. Congressional members, Aoun stated that while Lebanon remains fully committed to the agreement, Israel continues to refrain from compliance. He emphasized the need for an immediate halt to Israeli military operations, including the destruction and bulldozing of homes in southern Lebanese villages.
Aoun outlined that the activation of the agreement requires the swift return of Lebanese prisoners, the correction of disputed points along the Blue Line, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory to allow the Lebanese Army to deploy up to the internationally recognized borders. He warned that delays in implementation would maintain tensions in the south and prevent the state from exerting authority and allowing displaced citizens to return home.
Simultaneously, diplomatic efforts in Washington and New York face significant hurdles. Reports indicate that the eighth round of negotiations may be postponed until late 2024 or early 2025 due to political shifts in Israel and the United States. Furthermore, U.S. officials have reportedly linked Israeli withdrawal and Lebanese financial recovery to the Lebanese government's ability to dismantle Hezbollah's weapons and financial networks.
