Lebanon welcomes alternative forces to UNIFIL to support army

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with Admiral Edward Aldridge, the British government’s senior defense advisor for the Middle East, at the Baabda Palace to discuss regional security and military support.

President Aoun stated that Lebanon would welcome any alternative force to UNIFIL should its mandate not be extended. Such a force would be tasked with implementing UN Resolution 1701 and supporting the Lebanese Army in establishing state authority up to the internationally recognized borders. The President warned that a failure to extend UNIFIL or establish an alternative international force would create a security vacuum, particularly if Israeli occupation of southern villages continues.

Aoun also criticized Israel for failing to implement the ‘Framework Agreement’ reached during Washington negotiations, citing non-compliance with ceasefires, the destruction of homes, and unresolved issues regarding the ‘Blue Line.’

Admiral Aldridge reaffirmed British support for Lebanon across all sectors, specifically highlighting the Lebanese military. Discussions also covered economic reforms and coordination between Lebanon and Syria.
