Lee Chang-dong wins Silver Lion at Venice Film Festival
At the Venice Film Festival, director Lee Chang-dong has received the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize for his film ‘Possible Love’. Produced by Netflix, the South Korean work departs from typical streaming aesthetics to offer a profound critique of contemporary Korean society and labor issues.
The film draws inspiration from the 2009 labor crisis involving SsangYong Motor, specifically the 77-day factory occupation in Pyeongtaek that ended in a violent police crackdown. The narrative follows Ho-seok, a former welder traumatized by these events, and Ye-ji, a documentarian attempting to capture the history of those labor struggles.
