South Korean film Possible Love international reception

Overview

The South Korean drama ‘Possible Love’, directed by Lee Chang-dong, has gained significant international recognition. The film, which follows the intersecting lives of two married couples, was selected as South Korea’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. The Korean Film Council has noted the film’s strong potential for an awards campaign, including a planned push for the Best Picture category.

Following its selection, the film received the Grand Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. It also earned the position of first runner-up for the International People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and has been recognized at the New York Film Festival. Directed by Lee and co-written with Oh Jung-mi, the film marks the director’s first project since 2018’s ‘Burning’.

The narrative explores themes of social inequality and class disparity. The plot follows Mi-ok, a factory worker, and her husband Ho-seok, a laid-off worker, as they encounter Ye-ji, a wealthy documentary filmmaker, and her husband Sang-woo, a man of significant inheritance. As Ye-ji documents the lives of displaced workers, an unsettling attraction develops between Mi-ok and Sang-woo.

The production features a cast including Jeon Do-yeon, Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong. Following a select cinema release on October 23, Netflix is scheduled to handle the global streaming release on November 6.
