Lee & Ko partners with BioBigDataKorea for medical big data

Law firm Lee & Ko has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the BioBigDataKorea (BIKO) project group to promote the development and utilization of bio and medical big data.

BIKO is a national research and development infrastructure project jointly promoted by four South Korean agencies: the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The project aims to establish an integrated bio big data repository involving approximately 1 million citizens based on participant consent.

The collaboration focuses on providing legal and policy advisory services throughout the entire lifecycle of data, from collection to open utilization. Key areas of cooperation include advising on legal and institutional improvements for the AI and digital healthcare industries, legislative strategies for bio-data utilization, and providing legal counsel for the BIKO project. This partnership aims to address complex legal issues such as personal information protection, bioethics compliance, and the use of data for AI training to ensure a secure environment for precision medicine and bio-health industry innovation.
