South Korean medical big data development

South Korean entities are advancing the development and utilization of medical big data through legal, research, and clinical partnerships.

Initially, the law firm Lee & Ko entered a memorandum of understanding with the BioBigDataKorea (BIKO) project group. This collaboration aims to provide legal and policy advisory services for the national BIKO infrastructure, which seeks to establish an integrated repository of approximately 1 million citizens' bio-data. The partnership focuses on addressing legal issues regarding personal information protection, bioethics, and data use for AI training.

Subsequently, Korea University Guro Hospital reported progress in integrating national bio-big data with industrial commercialization. Through its National Bio Data Center, the hospital has focused on the utilization of medical data and the development of AI solutions for brain and spinal diseases. Additionally, the hospital expanded its healthcare reach by signing a business agreement with Gangneung Medical Center to improve regional medical services through patient referrals and joint research.
