Brazil Labor Court orders Meta to remove electoral harassment posts

The Brazilian Labor Court has ordered Meta to remove all posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads that encourage employers to monitor, expose, or dismiss employees based on their political preferences or voting choices. The ruling, issued by Judge Bruno José Perusso of the 77th Labor Court of São Paulo, mandates that Meta remove the content within 24 hours and immediately exclude it from recommendation systems like Reels and the Explore tab.

In addition to the removal, Meta must display a warning to all Brazilian users for five consecutive days, stating that political discrimination and electoral harassment in the workplace are prohibited. Failure to comply may result in fines of up to R$ 200,000. The decision follows an action by the Labor Public Ministry (MPT), which argues that these platforms facilitate discriminatory practices that exceed the limits of freedom of expression.

Separately, the court ordered politician Patrícia Queiroz to issue a retraction on her social media profiles within six hours, stating that workers have the right to choose candidates freely without fear of retaliation. She faces a daily fine of R$ 50,000 for non-compliance. The MPT is also seeking R$ 50 million in collective moral damages from Meta due to the spread of such content.
