Legal challenges against political figures in Pará

Overview

Prosecutors in Pará, Brazil, have initiated legal actions against several political figures involving allegations of electoral abuse and labor discrimination.

The Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) filed a lawsuit with the Regional Electoral Court of Pará seeking an eight-year ineligibility period for Governor-elect Daniel Barbosa Santos. The action also seeks to revoke the mandates of Federal Deputy Alessandra Haber Carvalho Santos and State Deputy-elect Alexandre Cesar Santos Gomes. The investigation centers on the ‘Olhar Cidadão’ project, a health initiative providing ophthalmological services to vulnerable populations. Prosecutors allege the project was used to abuse political and economic power by promoting the candidates through branded vehicles, banners, and social media. Additionally, the MPE raised concerns regarding a lack of transparency in the project’s financing, noting that while investigators were told the program was funded by private donations, there was a lack of formal accounting.

In a separate matter, the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT-PA/AP) filed a civil public action against Belém councilwoman and pastor Patrícia Queiroz. The lawsuit follows social media posts in which Queiroz encouraged business owners to monitor employees' political affiliations and dismiss those supporting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The MPT is seeking R$ 500,000 in collective moral damages, a formal retraction, and the removal of the content, citing risks of discriminatory practices.

Following these developments, a Labor Court ordered Queiroz to issue a public retraction on her social media profiles and prohibited her from inciting political discrimination. The ruling includes a daily fine of R$ 50,000 for non-compliance.
