Legal Reform Criticisms Emerge in Dominican Republic and Spain

Penalist Miguel Valerio, a prominent young criminal lawyer, called the cumulative sentencing provisions of the Dominican Republic's new Penal Code an "absurd legal practice," saying that stacking multiple sentences could lead to excessively long prison terms. He noted that the reform also introduces a "Medium Free" category that could keep primary offenders out of jail for minor infractions.

In Spain, political leaders are debating recent judicial and fiscal reforms. Castilla‑La Mancha President Emiliano García‑Page has been accused of using the term "agosticidad" to oppose the government's financing reform and to criticize the partial pardon granted to Catalan politician Laura Borràs. Regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso also faced scrutiny over the controversy surrounding the pardon and related public‑funding issues.
