Legal rulings in Colombia and Panama involve assassination and corruption

In Colombia, Harold Daniel Barragán Ovalle has been sentenced to 21 years and four months in prison for his role in the assassination of Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay. The sentencing, issued by a specialized criminal judge in Bogotá, follows a plea agreement in which Barragán accepted responsibility for crimes including aggravated homicide and conspiracy. Investigations revealed his involvement in planning the June 2025 attack in Bogotá, including coordinating via video calls and selecting the minor who carried out the shooting.

In Panama, former Santa Ana representative Jair Basilio Martínez Vega was sentenced to 48 months in prison for embezzlement. Additionally, judicial authorities have ordered the provisional detention of the former director of IFARHU, Bernardo Meneses, and two other individuals, including a public official, facing charges of corruption and ideological falsehood.
