Torre Annunziata debate over demolition of historic Palazzo Fienga

Deputy Francesco Mari has asked the Italian Ministry of Culture to suspend the demolition of Palazzo Fienga in Torre Annunziata and to review the recent revocation of its historic‑architectural protection. Built around 1880, the complex was once the stronghold of the Gionta clan of the Camorra and has been highlighted as a symbol of organized‑crime power. Earlier plans aimed to convert the site into a “Cittadella della Legalità” for police use, but the project was abandoned and demolition began in May 2024. The regional cultural heritage commission revoked the protection in February, allowing the demolition to proceed with a budget of €9.5 million, later supplemented by an additional €2.3 million from the Cohesion Fund. Mari’s inquiry seeks to verify the legality of the revocation and any possible violations of cultural heritage law.
