Italian coastal protection initiatives

In early August 2026 the Friuli‑Venezia Giulia regional government reaffirmed its commitment to fund the coastal restoration of Lignano Sabbiadoro, aiming to curb erosion, protect the beach environment and sustain tourism. The following day, the regional assessor Fabio Scoccimarro and Lisagest president Roberto Falcone confirmed that significant funds would continue to be allocated and that works would be accelerated and better coordinated to achieve those goals.

At the same time, the environmental NGO Legambiente intensified its call for stronger protection of the Lecciona beach in the Viareggio area. The group warned that rising tourist numbers and the commercialization of free‑access beaches increase pressure on the fragile ecosystem, and it urged stricter safeguards under European directives.

These coordinated actions underscore a growing concern in Italy over balancing tourism growth with the preservation of vulnerable coastal habitats.
