Legionella detected in Italian schools and multiple regional cases
Legionella bacteria have been detected in multiple locations across Italy, prompting health investigations and precautionary measures.
In Copparo, municipal sampling of the water systems in primary and secondary schools revealed the presence of the bacteria in several restrooms and the secondary school gym. In response, school authorities have prohibited the use of tap water for drinking and hand washing. Students are instructed to use water brought from home and to use hydroalcoholic gels or wipes for hygiene. To minimize risk, students are advised to flush toilets and immediately move away to avoid inhaling contaminated aerosol.
In the Vimercatese area, specifically between Lesmo and Arcore, seven cases of Legionella have been reported, with some patients requiring hospitalization. The local health agency, ATS, is investigating whether these cases are linked to a common source or are independent incidents. Authorities are examining water systems and locations frequented by the patients. This situation has raised local concern due to a 2023 incident in Lesmo where an elderly individual died from the infection, though that case was traced to domestic plumbing rather than the public water supply.
