Legionella outbreaks in Italy

Overview

Legionella bacteria detections and related illnesses have emerged in several Italian regions. In Copparo, municipal sampling identified the bacteria in water systems at primary and secondary schools, including restrooms and a gym. As a precaution, schools prohibited the use of tap water for drinking and hand washing, advising students to use water from home and hydroalcoholic gels.

In the Vimercatese area, seven cases were reported, some requiring hospitalization, prompting investigations by the local health agency (ATS) into potential common sources. The situation escalated in Palazzolo sull'Oglio, where the Community Hospital was evacuated following a confirmed case of Legionnaires' disease in an elderly patient who had stayed at the facility in September. ASST Franciacorta implemented disinfection protocols and transferred or discharged all current patients while the facility underwent environmental cleaning and monitoring.
