Argentina Chamber of Deputies to debate Malvinas sovereignty project

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies is set to begin debating the National Sovereignty Defense project on September 30. The initiative, sent by the government of Javier Milei, aims to strengthen legal protections over the Malvinas, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands.

Key provisions include increasing prison sentences up to 20 years for the unauthorized exploitation of renewable and non-renewable natural resources in the Malvinas and surrounding maritime spaces. The project seeks to replace Law 26.659 and establishes a public registry of violators, prohibiting both the State and private entities from contracting with listed individuals or companies. Additionally, the legislation introduces the possibility of trials in absentia for specific crimes.

Beyond sovereignty, the project proposes the creation of a National Security Council led by the President. This council would coordinate diplomatic, economic, military, and intelligence actions, with the authority to implement urgent measures such as financial or trade restrictions. Opposition members, including Deputy Juan Marino, have criticized the bill as a ‘Trojan horse,’ arguing it incorporates US-linked security and intelligence policies into Argentine law.
