Legislative initiatives address child protection and sexual abuse laws

Various legislative bodies are debating new measures to protect minors and address sexual violence. In Argentina, the Chamber of Deputies is analyzing twelve projects aimed at making sexual abuse against children imprescriptible, ensuring that the passage of time does not prevent legal action. This follows a case in Buenos Aires where a suspect was released because the statute of limitations had expired.

In Mexico, Deputy María Antonieta Pérez Reyes has proposed creating a Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Children in Chihuahua. This proposal follows reports of alleged sexual violence in Ciudad Juárez daycare centers and seeks to provide specialized personnel and budgets to handle sensitive investigations involving very young victims.

Other regional efforts include a proposal in Entre Ríos, Argentina, to establish protocols for detecting and preventing digital sexual violence against minors involving artificial intelligence. Additionally, in Aruba, lawmaker Eduard Pieters is seeking to discuss legal reforms that could include life imprisonment for those convicted of child sexual abuse.
