Latin American child protection legislative initiatives

Overview

Legislative bodies in Latin America and the Caribbean are debating various measures to enhance child protection and address different forms of violence.

In Argentina, efforts include analyzing projects to make sexual abuse against children imprescriptible to prevent the statute of limitations from expiring. Additionally, the Argentine Congress is considering a regime for the prevention, protection, and reparation of vicarious violence, which involves the use of children in parental disputes.

In Mexico, a proposal has been made to create a Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Children in Chihuahua following reports of alleged sexual violence in daycare centers. Other regional developments include discussions in Aruba regarding legal reforms that could include life imprisonment for child sexual abuse, and proposals in Entre Ríos, Argentina, to establish protocols for detecting digital sexual violence involving artificial intelligence.
