Mexico City security secretary reports crime reductions to Congress

Pablo Vázquez, the Secretary of Citizen Security for Mexico City, appeared before the local Congress as part of the second government report review. Vázquez reported significant decreases in high-impact crimes, noting a 64% reduction in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2019, and a 24% decrease during the current administration.

In terms of intentional homicides, official figures show a 53% drop compared to 2019 and an 18% decrease under the current management. To support these efforts, the administration has conducted 184,000 surveillance operations, acquired 3,500 new patrol cars, and is expanding the video surveillance network to reach 120,000 cameras by December.

Between October 2024 and September 2026, authorities detained 12,381 individuals for high-impact crimes and seized significant quantities of narcotics, including 1.8 tons of marijuana and 232 kilograms of cocaine, along with over 3,000 firearms. While supporters highlighted these results, opposition legislators questioned whether the reduction in high-impact statistics translates to a genuine sense of security for citizens facing common crimes like theft and extortion.
