Mexico security and crime statistics reports

Overview

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported significant progress in bilateral cooperation with the United States, noting a 98 percent decrease in irregular crossings at the northern border and a 75 percent drop in fentanyl seizures in the U.S. Sheinbaum highlighted the use of “mirror operations” and the extradition of approximately 94 drug traffickers.

In Mexico City, Secretary of Citizen Security Pablo Vázquez reported to Congress that high-impact crimes decreased by 64 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to 2019. Intentional homicides reportedly dropped by 53 percent relative to 2019 levels. During his second government report review, Vázquez noted a 24 percent decrease in high-impact crimes under the current administration and an 18 percent drop in intentional homicides.

To support these efforts, the administration has conducted 184,000 surveillance operations, acquired 3,500 patrol cars, and is expanding the video surveillance network with a goal of reaching 120,000 cameras by December. Between October 2024 and September 2026, authorities detained 12,381 individuals for high-impact crimes and seized 1.8 tons of marijuana, 232 kilograms of cocaine, and over 3,000 firearms. While officials highlighted these reductions, opposition legislators raised questions regarding whether these statistics reflect a genuine improvement in security against common crimes like theft and extortion.
