Dominican Republic Senate approves forced labor import ban
The Dominican Republic Senate has urgently approved a bill to prohibit the importation of goods produced through forced labor. Authored by Senator Félix Bautista, the legislation aims to establish a verification regime to prevent products made under conditions of servitude, debt bondage, or physical and psychological threats from entering the country.
Proponents argue that this measure will protect human rights and ensure fair market competition by preventing artificially low labor costs. Furthermore, the bill is intended to facilitate a reduction in US tariffs on Dominican exports from 12.5% to 10%, potentially saving Dominican exporters approximately USD 182 million annually and aligning the country with competitors like Mexico and Argentina.
The legislative session was held in Bonao, Monseñor Nouel, to commemorate the province's 44th anniversary. During this session, the Senate also approved the National Seed Law project and a measure to declare casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Dominican Republic.
