Legislators in Paraguay and Mexico propose healthcare funding shifts

In Paraguay, Senator Eduardo Nakayama has revived a proposal to eliminate private medical insurance for public officials. The initiative aims to redirect the estimated USD 100 million to USD 120 million spent annually on private coverage toward strengthening the public health system. Nakayama argued that the current arrangement creates artificial inequality between general workers and public officials, and emphasized that the funds should bolster public hospitals and medical supplies rather than increasing the burden on the Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS).

In Mexico, Deputy Noel Fernández Maturino praised an investment by Durango Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal to improve the supply of medicines, healing materials, and prosthetics. The state government announced an investment of 270 million pesos to support 315 medical units across 39 municipalities. Fernández Maturino called on the federal government to ensure sufficient resources are included in the 2027 Federal Expenditure Budget to maintain permanent and adequate healthcare services.
