Legnano Pride sparks controversy over use of historic city symbol

The upcoming inaugural Legnano Pride, scheduled for September 13, has sparked political tension in the Italian city of Legnano. The controversy centers on the organizers' decision to use the 'Guerriero di Legnano'—a historic local symbol—reinterpreted with rainbow colors for the event's communication.

Mario Almici, the group leader for Fratelli d'Italia in the city council, criticized the use of the monument, arguing that while the right to protest is undisputed, the municipal administration's patronage should be carefully evaluated. Almici expressed concerns regarding the association of the city's historical symbol with the Pride event and questioned why the parade route does not reach the city center at Piazza San Magno.

Mayor Lorenzo Radice defended the inclusion of the symbol, stating that the monument belongs to all citizens of Legnano and has been reinterpreted in various contexts, including sports and politics, throughout the years. Radice emphasized that the parade route is proposed by organizers rather than the municipal government.
