Lego Group begins using eMethanol for select plastic elements
The Lego Group has announced the start of using eMethanol, a renewable material, to manufacture more than 90 rigid Lego elements. These components include Minifigure hands, steering wheels, connectors, and cross axles.
The production utilizes a “Power-to-X” process, where renewable energy produces hydrogen that is combined with carbon captured from a biogas facility. This creates eMethanol, a renewable alternative for plastic production. The company noted that the material is integrated into a continuous production loop alongside virgin fossil fuels, allowing for scaling while reducing fossil fuel reliance.
The transition follows five years of testing and partnership to ensure that the new material maintains the safety, quality, and durability of existing products while integrating into current manufacturing infrastructure.
