Leipzig and Austrian cities announce waste management and cleanliness reforms

Leipzig, Germany, is implementing changes to its waste management and street cleaning services starting in 2027. Due to inflation, geopolitical shifts, and rising CO2 pricing, the city will increase waste collection fees. Specifically, residual waste emptying fees will rise by 0.03 to 0.71 euros per collection, and monthly processing fees will increase by 0.09 to 0.42 euros. Additionally, weekly residual waste collection outside the city center will be restricted to containers with a capacity of at least 240 liters. Paper-based tokens for paper recycling will also be replaced by digital versions in January 2027.

In Austria, a city government is planning to tighten its cleanliness laws (Reinhaltegesetz) by early 2027. The proposed amendment aims to hold offenders accountable not only through fines but also by requiring them to cover the actual costs of cleaning and removal. This includes scenarios such as graffiti artists or individuals who abandon supermarket shopping carts. The goal is to increase public cleanliness and encourage property owners to better secure items to prevent littering.
