Leipzig increases fines as illegal waste disposal rises

Illegal waste disposal is increasing in Leipzig, according to data from the Central Fine Authority. In 2025, the authority received 1,369 reports regarding violations of waste management regulations, such as the Circular Economy Act. These reports resulted in fines and warnings totaling 46,521 euros.

This represents a significant increase from 2024, when 939 reports led to 24,756 euros in fines. The disposal of approximately 4,500 tons of illegal waste and 3,400 discarded electrical appliances in 2025 cost around 684,000 euros, a burden ultimately borne by the public.

Authorities note that legal disposal options are available through 15 recycling centers in Leipzig, which accept items such as bulky waste, wood, scrap, and electronics for free. Violations can result in fines of up to 100,000 euros, and fines exceeding 200 euros may lead to an entry in the central business register.
