Leipzig reports increased sustainable mobility and record transit use
An evaluation of Leipzig’s 2030 mobility strategy indicates a successful shift toward sustainable transportation. Since 2018, the proportion of daily trips made by private vehicles has decreased from 39 percent to 31 percent, while the share of trips using public transport, walking, or cycling has risen from 61 percent to 69 percent.
Key developments include a 47-kilometer expansion of the cycling network and improved pedestrian safety through additional crosswalks. Public transport usage reached a record 171.2 million passengers in 2025. Additionally, air pollution levels from trucks and cars have improved significantly, with the city expected to meet its target values ahead of 2030.
However, the report identifies challenges regarding public transport efficiency. The average speed of trams decreased by 1.1 km/h and city buses by 0.6 km/h between 2018 and 2025, attributed to aging infrastructure and rapid population growth.
