Leipzig sustainable mobility strategy progress
Overview
An evaluation of Leipzig’s 2030 mobility strategy shows a successful transition toward sustainable transportation. Since 2018, the share of daily trips made by private vehicles has fallen from 39 percent to 31 percent, while the use of public transport, walking, and cycling has increased from 61 percent to 69 percent.
Key achievements include a 47-kilometer expansion of the cycling network and record public transport usage, reaching 171.2 million passengers in 2025. Air pollution levels from cars and trucks have also improved significantly, placing the city on track to meet its air quality targets ahead of the 2030 deadline.
Despite these gains, the report notes a decline in transit efficiency. Between 2018 and 2025, average speeds for trams decreased by 1.1 km/h and city buses by 0.6 km/h. Officials attribute these slowdowns to rapid population growth and the necessity of infrastructure maintenance.
