Leipzig reports progress in sustainable mobility strategy

An evaluation of Leipzig’s 2030 Mobility Strategy indicates a successful shift toward sustainable transportation. Since 2018, the proportion of daily trips made by private vehicles has decreased from 39 percent to 31 percent, while the use of environmentally friendly modes—including public transport, walking, and cycling—has risen from 61 percent to 69 percent.

Key achievements include a record 171.2 million public transport users in 2025 and a 47-kilometer expansion of the cycling network. Additionally, air pollution levels from trucks and cars have improved significantly, with the city expected to reach its air quality targets ahead of the 2030 deadline.

However, the report identifies challenges regarding transit efficiency. Despite priority signaling for trams, average speeds for trams decreased by 1.1 km/h and city buses by 0.6 km/h between 2018 and 2025. Officials attribute these slowdowns to population growth and the need for infrastructure maintenance.
