León approves new waste management fee

The León City Council has approved a new waste management ordinance, establishing an average annual fee of 94.91 euros per household. The measure, which covers both waste collection and treatment, passed following a tie-breaking vote by Mayor José Antonio Diez.

The new fee structure is divided into two components: a basic tariff consisting of a fixed annual amount of 24.73 euros plus a percentage based on cadastral value, and a generation tariff. The latter estimates waste production based on property surface area and the number of registered residents for homes, or activity type for businesses.

According to municipal data, the total annual cost of the service is estimated at 11.07 million euros, with 6.03 million euros allocated to collection and 5.04 million euros to treatment. The city maintains that this regulation will allow the service to cover its costs without generating a surplus or deficit, in compliance with Law 7/2022 on waste.
