León delays new waste tax collection until 2027
The León City Council has postponed the implementation of its new waste tax until the second half of 2027, following the upcoming municipal elections. Although the regulatory text has been presented, the administration currently lacks the necessary census data to issue individual bills. To resolve this, the council has commissioned a private company, Serteca Ingeniería, to create a new census by crossing cadastral values with the number of inhabitants per dwelling.
The new tax structure is expected to increase average bills by 4.5%, with a projected collection of approximately 11 million euros. Under this system, households with more inhabitants will pay higher rates. The administrative costs for drafting the ordinance and managing the census are expected to exceed 765,000 euros.
In a broader national context, a report by the ENT Foundation reveals significant disparities in waste management costs across Spanish provincial capitals. While the national weighted average for households is 119.6 euros, rates vary widely, ranging from 42.31 euros in Soria to 292.48 euros in Valencia. León currently maintains a relatively low rate of 62.53 euros.
