Lençóis Maranhenses National Park features unique sand dunes and lagoons

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil features a unique landscape of white sand dunes situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the jungle. Despite its desert-like appearance, the UNESCO World Heritage Site receives approximately 50 inches of rainfall annually.

Following the rainy season, the dunes are punctuated by more than 35,000 freshwater lagoons. These pools form within the vast expanse of sand, creating a distinct environment located near the doorstep of the Amazon rainforest.
