Overview

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil is characterized by a landscape of white sand dunes and seasonal freshwater lagoons. Although the area has a desert-like appearance, it receives significant annual rainfall, approximately 50 inches or 125 centimeters, which is more than the precipitation in Seattle.

Following the rainy season, more than 35,000 lagoons form in the depressions between the dunes. This process is facilitated by a partially impermeable layer of rock and clay beneath the sand that prevents immediate drainage. NASA has released satellite imagery from the Landsat 9 satellite, highlighting the white quartz dunes, some of which reach 30 meters in height, and the mosaic of blue and green lagoons that cover approximately 900 square kilometers.
