Lençóis Maranhenses sees surge in luxury and international tourism

Maranhão has seen a significant surge in international tourism, recording a 257.1% increase in foreign visitors between January and April 2026 compared to the previous year. This growth is particularly evident in the Lençóis Maranhenses region.

In January 2026 alone, the primary access points to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, located in Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro, received 35,300 visitors, a 138% increase from the 14,800 recorded in the same month the prior year.

Industry experts note a shift in visitor profiles, as the region transitions from a purely adventure-based destination to a hub for luxury tourism. The area is increasingly attracting high-net-worth individuals, families, and businesspeople seeking exclusivity, boutique hospitality, and authentic cultural experiences.
