Leo Gullotta accuses Sicilian authorities of political interference in theater awards
Italian actor Leo Gullotta has accused political interference and favoritism following his removal from the list of award recipients for the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia. The foundation is organizing an event in Taormina to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its theater festival.
Gullotta, an 80-year-old veteran of theater and cinema, stated that he had initially accepted an invitation from artistic director Simona Celi to receive an award, only to be later informed that his name had been withdrawn. He expressed deep offense, suggesting that a “manina destra” (a hidden hand) from the Sicilian Regional Government, which is a partner of the foundation, influenced the decision.
Simona Celi Zanetti, the artistic director, responded by clarifying that the foundation evaluated nearly 100 artists for only 12 available awards. She stated that the final selection was an inevitable part of the process and emphasized that there was no intention to question Gullotta’s professional or human value, maintaining a relationship of esteem with him.
The controversy has also drawn political reactions, with members of the Democratic Party (PD) announcing they would boycott the event in solidarity with the actor.
