Controversy over Sicilian theater awards

Italian actor Leo Gullotta has publicly disputed his removal from the list of award recipients for the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia, an organization celebrating its 50th anniversary theater festival.

Gullotta, a veteran of theater and cinema, stated that he had initially accepted an invitation from artistic director Simona Celi, only to be later informed his name had been withdrawn. He expressed deep offense, suggesting that the decision was influenced by political favoritism or a “manina destra” (a hidden hand) from the Sicilian Regional Government, which is a partner of the foundation.

The Foundation responded by explaining that the selection process required narrowing nearly 100 candidates down to 12 awardees. Simona Celi Zanetti emphasized that the final selection was an inevitable part of the process and maintained that there was no intention to question Gullotta’s professional or human value. The controversy has also led members of the Democratic Party (PD) to announce a boycott of the event in solidarity with the actor.
